Global Participation in the Women’s March

The Women’s March on Washington was held yesterday and the participation was incredible. Not only did hundreds of thousands of women (and men) turn out in Washington, but groups marched in over 500 cities and towns across the United States. In addition, marches were held in almost 50 other countries, including a small group of about 30 people in Antarctica! With so much participation in the event, I decided to put together a visualization showing every location which participated along with the number of participants.

Note: The visualization shown here is sized down quite a bit so that it will fit nicely in this blog. If your device can handle a higher resolution, you can check out the full visualization here.

Update 01/23/2017 6:30 PM: Data was collected continuously throughout Sunday and Monday, so I've updated the visualization with the latest set of information.

  1. Before anyone comments, I'll be the first to note that Antarctica is not on the map. Adding it caused the map to zoom out extremely far and I opted to exclude it.

  2. One additional note. It seems that data has been coming in over the past day and this may be a bit out of date. I'll be updating with fresh data this evening.

  3. Thank you, I am anxious to see final estimates. There is a deeper phenomenon here than has been addressed. Almost all of history shows male bias in history reporting, government and religion establishments, etc. and this is women making a stand for their voices to be heard, that is why it has spread beyond the US to the world.
